What an exciting start to the Copa Tejas! First match took place at Southwest University Park in El Paso. An announced attendance of 7,458 was electric all evening and had the feel of a derby.
Both clubs came out attacking and it was Locomotive that took a 2-0 lead with goals by Nick Ross at 45+1 minute mark and Derek Gebhard found an open net in the 77th.
The Toros looked like they would leave El Paso without any points but quickly battled back in the 78th minute, Romilio Hernandez booted a rocket blast from about 30 yards out and beat the outreached arms of El Paso Keeper Logan Ketterer. RGV was able to steal 2 points from El Paso and walk away with a hard earned point when a free kick in the 90th minute crossed into the box and Jesus Enriquez connected a well placed header and scored.
There was plenty of action and tackles which lead to 5 combined yellow cards.
Up next, a round 2 in the Copa Tejas that is full of firsts. Next weekend, March 30 will be Austin Bold v San Antonio FC. This will be the first time ever that both teams will face each other, first time that Austin Bold plays at the new COTA soccer stadium, both teams are looking for their first victory of the season and both teams looking to take an early first place lead in the Copa Tejas table.
Both clubs are only separated by about 70 miles from stadium to stadium, which in the USL Western Conference makes SAFC and Austin practically next doors neighbors.
There is a lot on the line next weekend at Circuit of the Americas just outside of Austin. Match will take place at Bold Stadium March 30th and kicks off at 7:30 PM
