COPA TEJAS WRAP UP- ROUND 2 (AUSTIN BOLD V SAN ANTONIO FC)

A historic night at Bold Stadium on the grounds of the Circuit of the Americas (COTA). Copa Tejas Round 2 was simultaneously Austin Bold FC’s first ever home match, the first ever USL Championship regular season meeting between the Austin Bold FC and San Antonio FC as well as the first edition of the Central Texas Derby.

The talk during leading up to the match was which city had the better tacos, better festivals and better night life. With all the rivalry talk and discussions, while entertaining, don’t mean much in the Copa Tejas table.

It was a chilly and blistery night at Bold Stadium and did not deter the fans as both Austin and SAFC fans came out in force as a sell out crowd. After the pregame ceremonies, the match kicked off and quickly turned into a physical one with plenty of fouls and yellow card by SAFC’s Maguraushe. Both clubs had their chances to put one away but the wind was a big factor and the half ended 0-0.

The Copa Tejas Cup made the trip up to COTA for the fans to see and had some camera time during half time as Steve Arters and Danielle Gawronski were interviewed and give the Copa Tejas some exposure.

Second half was much like the first half, both teams maintained a high pressure, high tempo, physical play. In the 77th minute Austin Bold struck big on a corner with a header by McFarlane that found Kleber for the tap in, with the SAFC’s defense leaving him completely uncovered and caught SAFC keeper Viscosi out of position. Despite a late charge by SAFC, the lone goal was enough for Austin to earn it’s first ever three points in the USL and Copa Tejas.

Up next, a round 3 match up where the Locomotive will travel from West Texas to the Capital City to face Austin Bold who holds an early first place lead in Copa Tejas. Match will be at Bold Stadium on Sunday April 21st. For more on Copa Tejas go to
