San Antonio FC has announced it’s 2022 schedule. The Alamo City Boys will participate in the USL Championship Western Conference. San Antonio FC will play 34 matches, 17 at home and 17 Away. There been a few changes to the USL Championship since last season. Austin Bold rights were sold and folded operations and will return in the future likely in Forth Worth or Arlington. Tacoma Defiance and Real Monarch have left for MLS Next Pro. There was some speculation of Division realignment but USL Championship went back to the two conference format and eliminated the four divisions. Monterey Bay FC (formerly Fresno FC) join as an expansion team for the 2022 season.
SAFC will face Western Conference foes twice and will face South Texas Derby rival RGVFC Toros three times. SAFC will face nine Eastern Conference clubs, five at home. The Schedule is leaning heavy on away matches during the first half of the season. They play only one home match in March and May and have a stretch of Six Away Matches out of Eight from April 23rd to June 24th. SAFC will finish out the season with four out of the last six at home. Some Home Matches of note, Home Opener versus Detroit City FC on March 12th; Phoenix Rising (and Marcus Epps) on April 2nd; RGV Toros on August20th; San Diego Loyal on Sept 10th and USL Cup Champions come to town for regular season finale on October 15th. SAFC has a summer break from between July 2nd and July 16th, likely some international friendlies during the break.
The Path to the 2022 USL Championship Playoffs will be more difficult as San Antonio FC plays Western Conference foes just twice with the exception of RGV Toros (three times). Points on the road will be crucial. Only the top 7 in each conference make it to the playoffs and top seed gets a bye. Similar to the NFL’s current playoff format.
