The second round of qualifying matches have arrived and the USMNT come into Austin with 5 points looking to solidify their position in reaching Qatar for the World Cup. Jamaica has just one point to show for their efforts. An important battle takes place this afternoon at Q2 where the USMNT played just two months ago in the Gold Cup Semi-Final victory over World Cup host nation Qatar.
The USMNT will be without Christian Pulisic who is out with an injury and John Brooks will also be absent as he withdrew from the team due to back issues. The roster is deep enough for the Americans to replace both players sitting this round of matches out. Zardes and Pepi will likely see minutes. Matt Turner, who shined in the Gold Cup, may cement himself as the goalkeeper of the future going into Qatar if they qualify.
Jamaica on the other hand, currently sit in last place in the CONCACAF table. They played well in Azteca keeping it close and almost walked away with a draw until Henry Martin scored in the 89th minute to give El Tri the victory, that was follow up by a disappointing 3-nil loss to Panama at home and earned a point at Costa Rica. Jamaica’s player to look out for is Shamar Nicholson, who has scored the only two goals in qualifying.
The last time US and Jamaica met was in the Gold Cup Quarterfinal on July 25th at AT&T Stadium. The US will look to continue its recent Texas success with another victory tonight at Q2, Match kickoff will be in front of a sold out crowd at 6:30 PM.
