Athenians Match Day 8 Recap: Road Warriors

Buda, Texas

It was an afternoon matinee under a sweltering summer Texas sun. The Athenians returned to the top of the UWS Power Rankings at number 4 and looking to keep pace with Lone Star Republic in the battle for the Southwest Conference. Athenians began a three match road trip to finish out the season in Buda against CTX Hornets.

The CTX Hornets did an excellent job in the first 25 minutes of the match keeping Athenians scoreless despite San Antonio have majority of possession and the Hornets sat back looking for a mistake and counter attack. In the 26th minute the deadlock was broken as Brooke Hanson came down the right side of the pitch and made a low cross across the penalty box to Paityn Bretzer, who scored from about 10 yards out. Hornets still held tough keeping the match close but Amanda Smith found the back of the net from about 15 yards out in stoppage time. It was Smith’s team leading seventh goal of the season.

The Athenians rolled into the second half with a 2-0 lead and did not waste time building on the lead, just two minutes into the second half, Eden Bretzer scored the first of her three goals on a precision assist from Helene Farris. Khori Banks, Johnson High School alumn, made her Athenians debut in the 70th minute and scored in the 82nd minute. Eden Bretzer rounded out her hat trick with goals in the 75th and 87th minute.

This looked liked the most complete match the Athenians have played, by dictating tempo and rhythm all match long and the defense stifled and potential Hornet attacks.

The Athenians get a big win on the road to clinch at least a second place spot in the Southwest Conference with a 6-0 victory over CTX Hornets.
