High School Soccer: Central Catholic and LEE meet in a epic inter city match up

Bob Benson ’66 Stadium

An early season match up between two inter city San Antonio powerhouse schools had the feeling of a state championship on Tuesday night at Bob Benson ’66 Stadium. LEE (7-0-1) faced Central Catholic (6-2-0) in an epic battle for the ages. Both schools came in nationally ranked, LEE was in the 6A UIL Sate Final last year and Central Catholic are reigning three time TAPPS State Champions.

The atmosphere was buzzing before kickoff as fans, friends and family of both schools jam packed the stands for this match. The match itself was fast paced, physical and neither defense gave up much. Both Goalkeepers played an outstanding game, LEE’s Joey Batrouni made a fantastic goal line save in the second half; Central Catholic’s Alejandro Chavarria made some excellent diving saves and finished with 5 saves for the night.

The two most notable players on the pitch were Jose Gallegos and Wilmar Aguilar. Two young men with bright futures in soccer; both showcased their talents and the back line from both both schools did their best to contain Jose and Wilmar.

The score was dead locked nil-nil until late into the second half when a pass from LEE midfielder Andrew Erickson from the center circle found Wilmar Aguilar and Wilmar took the Central Catholic defense. Aguilar was able to shake the Central Catholic defender just enough to take a low fast shot that found the low corner of the post, just out of reach of Chavarria. It was all LEE needed; the final was LEE 1 – Central Catholic 0.
